1. Chon Thanh through historical periods:
The story says that once in a difficult situation when running to Chon Thanh area today, Nguyen Anh was helped by local people with food and protection. Later when he ascended the throne, Gia Long remembered and named the land of sincere and honest people Chan Thanh (pronounced Chan Thanh) to acknowledge the gratitude of the people here.
By the 19th century, the Nguyen Dynasty divided the Southern region into 6 provinces (also known as the six provinces); Chon Thanh area and the entire Dong Nai and Song Be areas at that time belonged to Bien Hoa province.
At the end of the 19th century, the French colonialists invaded and divided Cochinchina into four areas: Saigon, My Tho, Vinh Long and Bat Xac, of which the Saigon area was divided into sub-areas; The land west and south of the Saigon River (including Chon Thanh) belongs to Thu Dau Mot sub-area (in 1889, the French colonialists changed Thu Dau Mot sub-area to Thu Dau Mot province).
In the early twentieth century, Chon Thanh land was located in Hon Quan district, Thu Dau Mot province. At this time, Chon Thanh had 4 Kinh villages (including Tan Lap Phu, Tan Quan, Tan Khai, Tan Thanh in Tan Minh canton with General Hien as Chief) and a number of ethnic minority phums and squirrels (located in Lam canton). Can in the West is headed by General Me). This administrative boundary remained until after the 1954 Geneva Agreement and the early period of Ngo Dinh Diem's administration.
On the revolutionary side, in 1951, the two provinces of Thu Dau Mot and Bien Hoa were merged into Thu Bien and Chon Thanh provinces in Hon Quan district, Thu Bien province.
In October 1956, the Ngo Dinh Diem government separated some areas in the north of Thu Dau Mot and Bien Hoa provinces to establish two new provinces, Binh Long and Phuoc Long. Binh Long province was established by Decree No. 143/NV (October 22, 1956) including three districts: An Loc, Loc Ninh and Chon Thanh. Thus, with the establishment of Binh Long province, the place name Chon Thanh appeared with a district-level administrative scale (however, on January 27, 1964, Chon Thanh district was officially born).
In October 1961, in order to comply with the situation of directing the area of operation corresponding to the administrative division of the Saigon government, the Central Committee of the Southern Department separated Binh Long from Thu Bien province to establish a new province of Thu Bien. Binh Long province includes 3 districts with numerical designations: C45 - Chon Thanh, C55 - Hon Quan and C65 - Loc Ninh.
On January 30, 1971, due to the request to direct the resistance, the Central Bureau dissolved Area 10, establishing Binh Phuoc Subdivision including two provinces of Binh Long and Phuoc Long. At the end of 1972, Binh Phuoc Subdivision was dissolved and Binh Phuoc province was established. Chon Thanh District (C45) belongs to Binh Phuoc subdivision (since 1972, Binh Phuoc province), including the old communes of Hung Long, Minh Thanh, Minh Hoa, Nha Bich, Tan Quan, Tan Khai...
After the liberation of the South , the old administrative boundaries are maintained. But in early 1977, according to Decree 55/CP signed on March 11, 1977, merging the three districts of An Loc, Loc Ninh and Chon Thanh into Binh Long district. Chon Thanh became part of Binh Long district, a fairly large district located close to the border, in the north of Song Be province.
In March 1978, according to Decree 34/CP of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam signed on February 9, 1978, Loc Ninh town and a number of northern communes close to the border were separated to establish the district. Loc Ninh. The remaining Binh Long district (including Chon Thanh) is still the largest district of Song Be province, including 19 communes and 02 towns (Chon Thanh and An Loc).
In early 2003, the Government issued Decree No. 17/2003/ND-CP dated February 20, 2003, on the establishment of Chon Thanh and Bu Dop districts in Binh Phuoc province (Binh Phuoc province held an announcement ceremony on February 20, 2003). May 2, 2003). According to this Decree, Chon Thanh district was newly established including 7 communes (Minh Long, Minh Thanh, Tan Quan, Nha Bich, Minh Lap, Minh Thang, Minh Hung) and Chon Thanh town.
In mid-2005, according to Decree No. 60/2005/ND-CP dated May 16, 2005 of the Government, Chon Thanh district had a new commune established, Thanh Tam commune (separated from Chon Thanh town).
On April 10, 2009, the Government issued Decree No. 14/ND-CP, Chon Thanh district had a new commune established, Quang Minh commune (separated from Tan Quan commune, now part of Hon Quan district). . Currently, Chon Thanh district has 8 communes and 1 town.
